Portuguese Slate

Slate is one of the heaviest and most durable substances known to man. The slate used for these tables top is Portuguese. It is cleaved whole, sawn, and then machined to give a smooth, but natural, finish.

Oak Legs & Side Rails

Oak is renowned for its strength, density and resistance to fungal and insect attack. The oak used in this table is European and unfinished to allow its character to develop.

Assembly of our slate tables is very simple. Each leg is rebated to house the joints on the rails, (see accompanying picture). These simply slot together and should be tapped home using a timber mallet or rubber/hide hammer with striking block. At least two strong people are then required to lift the slate on top given its weight, which ensures it will not move.

Maintenance

The elements will have very little effect on the slate. The legs and side rail will weather over time and silver. If you wish to maintain the appearance of the oak, we recommend they are treated with Danish Oil.

If you need to move your table at a later date, you may need to firmly tap the rails out from the legs, particularly if the joints have expanded. Again, we strongly recommend that you use a timber mallet or rubber/hide hammer with a striking block.
