Burnay
Burnay is a type of ceramic introduced to the Philippines by early Chinese immigrants. It is principally produced in the Vigan region, where the required high grade of clay can be found in abundance.
The clay is mashed by the indigenous Carabaos, (water buffalo), and mixed with sand. The material is then thrown in traditional fashion, before being kiln fired at extremely high temperatures.
Burnay pots are generally used to store water, rice grains, wine and vinegar. They are also particularly well suited for use as pickling and fermenting vessels. They are believed to impart a distinctive, desirable tinge.
Maintenance
Given that Burnay is a completely organic product, the weathering process is very natural and gentle. Burnay products are extremely durable given the high temperatures they are fired at.
