Halloween
Halloween has it roots in a Celtic pagan tradition that marked the end of the harvest season. It was believed that on this day spirits of the dead could return and cause harm to the living and crop stores.
It is widely believed that the Celts placed skeleton lanterns in their windows to ward off these evil spirits. Initially, it seems they were carved from turnips or rutabaga, also known as the yellow turnip.
Over the years the legend of Halloween has evolved, along with a host of further traditions regarding the carving of skeleton lanterns. Pumpkins have undoubtedly become the most popular medium - and are now often referred to as Jack-O’-Lanterns once carved.
This model is a ceramic variant that has developed in Mexico, where they have been traditionally crafted. Our Mexican pumpkin lanterns are hand washed in a selection of stains: Orange, Red, Blue and Green.
As a public holiday Halloween has seen an increase in popularity over recent years. It has recently been claimed that it now generates more retail spending than any other public holiday in the UK after Christmas.
